There is One Way

March 20, 2012

“After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘Do you want to go away as well?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.'” John 6:66-69

Jesus did something amazing. He fed over 5000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and two fish! In some places today that may not even be enough to feed a family of 5 for a day. This action was nothing short of miraculous.

Because of this, Jesus had many people following Him. Jesus and the Twelve went across the sea but people followed them. They wanted more from Jesus.

The problem was, they were not as much interested in gaining spiritual insights as they were about getting another free meal. Jesus saw this and began to teach.

He told them about how He is the bread of life. In this sermon He said things like “You need to eat my flesh and drink my blood” (paraphrased).

At the end of His teaching people began to comment on how Jesus was saying some very difficult statements. They were not sure they wanted anything from Him at this moment because it was hard to process all that He meant.

So they left. Thousands of people no longer followed Jesus because He asked too much of them.

Now it must be understood that Jesus was not calling His followers to cannibalism. He was alluding to a time when we would take the Lord’s Supper together. When we take the bread and cup we remember that Jesus’ body was broken and blood was poured out for us.

But people respond the same way today. When a preacher begins to call the congregation to change, some people stop going to that church.

When a man reads a passage of Scripture and he feels that he needs to change, sometimes he decides that the Scriptures must be speaking in a figurative way. That way he can continue living however he wants.

Instead of responding in that way, let’s respond as Peter did. We need to realize that Jesus is the Holy One of God! There is no other way of salvation. It is only through Him!

We should be excited to follow Him because He is the only One leading us anywhere!

Don’t forget who Jesus is and what He has done. Don’t let fear keep you from committing completely!
